I picked him up; the roads were slick with snow. He came out in his casual clothes. He made some joke as he entered the vehicle and everyone laughed. I smiled, but I was distracted by driving. The voices continued to talk - it was cold.
When we reached the school he didn't open my doors, another person's date did that. The gym was warm and no one was really doing anything at the moment. We stood around and chatted. I was nervous; I couldn't dance. People finally started dancing to the music. I just hopped around with my group. The flashing strobe lights passed between us. Hundreds of sweaty bodies were pressed together.
It was near the end when we did a slow dance. It was awkward. We just stepped back and forth, our hands barely touched each other: afraid. This felt strangely like the sixth grade dance that we had been forced to do. We didn't meet each others' eyes (like we didn't really want to know who we were dancing with).
"Did you see the guy on animal planet who discovered that weird-faced animal? I think it's called the Redwood Butt Smiler."
Oh, he just had to say that.

Are you talking about a real date you went on, or is this a made up story?
