My apartment is an ordinary living space. It meets the needs of the group of girls living in them, and has only a few faults one could complain about. The kitchen is a little crowded, the couches smell a little off, and the walls are a bit too thin. The air conditioner is right next to my window. At nights it roars loudly in my sleepy ears and I can't even appreciate the cool air against my brow. That's why I turn the thermometer off. I don't care if my roommates get hot, they can deal with that problem far better than I can if the machine was left on.
Really, there's not much to complain about.
There is something really strange in this apartment though. Something, that at first freaked out one of my roommates, but now she exploits it whenever she has the chance. It is our dungeon. This little basement cannot be accessed by stairs or ladders. No, it is hidden by a trap door in our pantry. With the help of the boys next door, we explored this unbidden territory.
There is a few feet where you must drop onto hard dirt ground. It is pitch black, until you find the lone light. It smells musty and the dampness creeps along your skin. The dungeon stretches on, past the skeletons of unfinished paneling and under the whole apartment complex. The darkness engulfs those parts.
Hay is littered across the ground along with various other discarded items. While the installation from the floor above sags, making the ceiling of this area lower than it previously was. While checking around this basement, we came to the realization that no one else had access to this hidden appendage of the apartments. That thought brought great relief to my roommates and myself. We were half afraid that someone would sneak under there and pop up into our apartment and kill us all. But since we had the only trap door, we felt secure in our dwelling.
To say the least, this dungeon is an attraction for friends and neighbors. It was an odd place. I hope that nothing will occur from it, save the Halloween party we plan on having down there. I hope there aren't any little critters crawling around down there, below me. All I want is a normal apartment where I can live for a few months and be safe.
